On Wheels The third railway vehicle appearing on the Czech Mint's silver coin from the series entitled On Wheels is the electric locomotive series 140 nicknamed "Bobina". The Czechoslovak railways were in ruins after the end of World War II. Nevertheless, they managed to modernise 1,000 km of main lines in May 1946. In the same year, the railways placed an order for an electric locomotive. Production was handed over to Škoda in Plzeň, but the machine was to use sophisticated technology, so Swiss firms were invited to develop it. The prototype of the new series, designated 140 or E 499.0, was completed in 1953. The cooperation with Swiss manufacturers enabled a great technological leap that made Czechoslovak electric locomotives comparable to contemporary types of Western provenance. The machines were designed to be universal and were used for express, passenger, freight and siding service. Bobina reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h, which was the highest speed allowed on our territory. Series production of the 140 series ran concurrently with the production of steam locomotives until 1958, and its design and functional design became the basis for other high-quality Škoda locomotives. Due to the high cost of foreign licences, work on the development of in-house technology continued apace and was first tested in 1957 on the prototype of the later 141 series. However, deliveries of the new machines did not endanger the operation of the existing locomotives of the 140 series - Bobiny with long-distance trains ran daily from Slovakia to Prague. Their position remained unshakable until the end of the 1980s. Few locomotives of the 140 series survived the year 2000, but even so, they can be seen on the rails today - for example in the service of private carriers, as operating backup or during nostalgic trips in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, but also in the DPRK, where the modified Bobina was exported. The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Luboš Charvát, is dominated by the depiction of Bobina on the rails. Following the title of the cycle, another motif of the reverse is a detail of one of the locomotive wheels. The obverse side of the coin is similar, its circumference is formed by sections of the wheels of various means of transport. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2021.
