Tariel is a central character depicted in the classic Medieval epic poem The Knight in the Panther’s Skin by the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. This is considered to be one of the great chivalric romances and is the subject of an ongoing series of coins from the Lithuanian Mint. The background consists of rocky terrain, and the entire image is crafted in the style of classic Medieval artwork.  The title The Knight in the Panther’s Skin refers to Tariel, who is found early in the poem crying by a river while dressed in a panther’s skin. Tariel, with the help of Avtandil, later sets out on a quest to find his true love, Nestan-Darejan. This epic poem is a classic adventure story that contains strong themes of courtly love and friendship. It is also notable for its stance against arranged marriage and its equal views of men and women. This 12th-century masterpiece was definitely ahead of its time in that regard.
