Going on with the Giants Art series, this stunning set of twelve bullion coins of pure .999 silver pays tribute to Raphael, a great Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, and his legendary oil painting “Sistine Madonna”. This coin set by Niue weighs 960 g and measures 210x354 mm that makes it one of the biggest commemorative coins in the world. The obverse of each rectangular-shaped coin bears the portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II. Around the effigy, there are the inscriptions indicating the Queen’s name, the face value of the silver proof coin, its issuing country and year. Each coin in this masterpiece set features a cut-out from the Sistine Madonna and when displayed together, depicts a replica of the original piece. Created by Raphael Sanzio da Urbino just a few short years before his death, the painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the baby Christ surrounded by Saint Sixtus, Barbara and two cherubs. The painting combines the best features of Raphael’s style: simplicity, feel for harmony and ability to create spiritual beauty. The Sistine Madonna is now kept in the Old Masters Gallery in Dresden.
