Although his rule as the King of Poland was not long, starting in 1501, he had served as a Grand Duke of Lithuania since 1492. As the King of Poland, he was immediately made subservient to the Polish Senate and gentry. This fact was confirmed by signing the act known as the Privilege of Mielnik. In consequence of the Nihil novi constitution signed afterwards, the dominance of the nobility’s Chamber of Deputies expanded over the Senate and King. Alexander Jagiellon was a highly educated and modest person. In 1495, he married Helena of Moscow; the marriage was a loving one and the royal couple was close. He died childless in 1506 in Vilnius.
