The Mint says about this coin:
The series of commemorative coins “Discover Poland” issued by the National Bank of Poland was extended by the fifth coin. This time the reverse of a 5-zloty token features the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin – the seat of the dukes of Pomerania – the historic seat of the House of Griffins, who ruled the Duchy of Pomerania till the XVII century. Commemorative and historical value Attractive design Limited mintage Legal tender on the territory of the Republic of Poland The Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin reflects the turbulent history of the province and the changes it underwent during the centuries. Already at the beginning of the 12 nd century, on the site of today’s castle, there was a Slavic settlement with a court of duke Wartislaw I. In the mid-14 th century, duke Barnim III built a stone house and a chapel on the castle hill. Consecutively, the stone structure was strengthened and expanded in the late-Gothic style by Casimir V of Pomerania. In 1530, the building was destroyed by fire and then reconstructed in the Renaissance style. The seat of the Pomeranian dukes was a subject to consecutive reconstructions till the beginning of the 17 th century. When the Griffin dynasty unexpectedly came to an end, the castle was occupied by a Swedish governor, to subsequently became a Prussian property allocated to the garrison. Dilapidated and devastated, it was destroyed by the allies during the bombardments of 1944. Shortly after World War II, the castle was successfully rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Today, the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin houses several administrative and cultural institutions, including an opera, a cinema, some restaurants and offices of public administration. Now it is a popular place for concerts, exhibitions and various cultural and scientific events.
