First commemorative coin inaugurating the series „100 th Anniversary of Regaining Independence by Poland” is devoted to Józef Piłsudski – the First Marshal of Poland. The struggle for independence intensified over the years 1914-1918. Józef Piłsudski, released in November 1918 from the Magdeburg fortress, was widely supported by the Polish people. His arrival in Warsaw in November 1918 was a turning point in the long-lasting fight for Polish independence and the Polish state. Considered to be a freedom fighter and a national leader standing above all boundaries, Piłsudski has earned a strong military and political support. After 123 years, Poland finally reappeared on the map of Europe. As the Chief of State and the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, and consecutively the Marshal of Poland, Józef Piłsudski defended the frontiers of a newly reborn Polish state. The great victory of the Polish Army in the Battle of Warsaw, followed by the defeat of the Red Army during the Battle of the Niemen River in 1920, exerted an indelible effect on the development of Polish statehood. Poland retained independence and thwarted the attempts of Bolshevik troops to widespread the revolutionary ideas across Western Europe.
