Second commemorative coin inaugurating the series „100 th Anniversary of Regaining Independence by Poland” is devoted to Józef Haller – Lieutenant General of the Polish Army. By 2018, the National Bank of Poland is going to present three consecutive issues honoring historical figures who played a key role in the struggle for independent Polish state.   commemorative and historical value attractive design limited mintage unique patriotic souvenir Józef Haller (1873-1960) was a Polish right-wing politician, legionary of Polish Legions and Lieutenant General of the Polish Army. His figure stands out among many other Polish military commanders. His life he proved that the army has no chance to survive and achieve a victory if its leader doesn’t care about the highest moral and spiritual values. Józef Haller was born in a family of Polish landed gentry with strong patriotic traditions. He studied artillery at the Technical Military Academy in Vienna to serve in the Austrian army until taking command of the Second Brigade of the Legions during First World War. Afterwards, he arrived to France and created what was known as the Blue Army . In 1920, being entrusted with the command of the Pomeranian Front, he claimed the territory of Pomerania granted to Poland according to the Treaty of Versailles. Seventy thousand well-armed soldiers of the Blue Army fought in in the Polish-Ukrainian and Polish-Bolshevik wars (1919-1920). After the outbreak of World War II, Joseph Haller held the position of the minister without portfolio in the government of Władysław Sikorski, and after war, he served as minister of education in the Polish Government in Exile. Since 1945, Józef Haller lived in London and didn’t take active part in Polish political activities. Poland’s symbolic wedding to the sea conducted by Józef Haller on 10 February 1920 in Puck was an important patriotic act and a milestone on the way of regaining independence by the Polish people.
