The jubilee is a wonderful opportunity to remind us of their heroic commitment. The word ‘Cichociemni’ means ‘the quiet and the dark ones’, as the soldiers would always appear in silence and disappear in the darkness. The Cichociemni paratroopers were specially trained soldiers prepared to become leaders of the Polish underground domestic army. Their main objective was to establish and train the resistance movement, as well as to adopt irregular warfare approaches within the occupied territories. The Cichociemni were volunteers. Their first operation took place overnight on February 15, 1941. Till December 1944, 316 soldiers were secretly parachuted into Poland. There were several outstanding personalities withing the organization, including a General of the Polish Army Leopold Okulicki, a notable leader of the Home Army Jan Pwinik, a journalist Jan Nowak-Jeziorański and a university professor Elżbieta Zawacka. The traditions of the Cichociemni are continued by the Polish Military Unit GROM. Denomination: 10 zloty Material: Ag 925 Weight: 14.14 g Date of issue: February 2016 |
