Józef Marian Chełmoński (born November 7th, 1849 in Boczki, died April 6th, 1914 in Kulkówka Zarzeczna) – Polish painter and illustrator active in Munich, Paris and Warsaw. Although Chełmoński’s works represent a realistic trend in Polish painting, his art goes far beyond this classification. The painter looked for inspiration in the rural environment of his motherland. Peasants’ huts, genre scenes in the countryside or in the inn – these were the most typical motifs of his works. Barrage of criticism forced Chełmoński to move to Paris in 1875. He made a brilliant career in France, winning the recognition from both the critics and the audience. His paintings, showing various genre scenes of Polish countryside, including famous three- and four-in-hand carriages, were very well-received abroad. He enjoyed big financial success thanks to the contract with a famous French magazine “Le Monde Illustre” where he worked as an illustrator. Józef Chełmoński as a painter was far ahead the artistic era he lived in. His art, generally perceived as realistic, should in fact be considered from a wider angle. For example, the painting Departing cranes, 1871, showing a crippled animal standing against departing birds, is highly symbolic in meaning. Also, the famous Indian Summer, though now regarded as one of the best paintings created by Chełmoński, was utterly condemned by his contemporaries. Robust peasant woman depicted in the picture simply shocked the public accustomed to more conventional and idealized visual representations of the female beauty. Józef Chełmoński was a rebellious artist who rejected stereotypes and conventions in art. In private he was against the artificial behavior of salons and its etiquette. Authenticity was what he valued the most during his entire life.
