Olga Boznańska (born 15 April 1865 in Cracow, died 26 October 1940 in Paris) – Polish painter and portraitist of the post-impressionist period born in Polish-French family. Olga Boznańska studied in Munich, then moved to Paris, where she was artistically active for the rest of her life. She became appreciated in the international artistic circles, with her works displayed in the most renowned art galleries in Vienna, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin and London. Olga Boznańska developed her individual style based on a liberal interpretation of the principles of impressionism. In her paintings she used black color and various shades of grey – hues generally rejected by the impressionists. Oil paints and pastels applied on canvas and cardboard were her main artistic tools. Olga Boznańska earned fame as a portraitist. In-depth psychological analysis of the depicted people was the axis of her works. She portrayed adults and children both from her immediate environment and the European intellectual elites and aristocracy. Her greatest works encompass such paintings as “Girl with Chrysanthemums”, “Portrait of Lady Dygat”, “Portrait of the Artist Paul Nauen” and “Anemones”.
