Coin of the National Bank of Poland issued on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of Birth of Stefan Żeromski. Commemorative and historical value Attractive design Limited mintage Stefan Żeromski (born October 14th, 1864 in Strawczyn, died November 20th, 1925 in Warsaw), was an outstanding Polish novelist and dramatist. Żeromski descended from an impoverished noble family. After graduating from the State Secondary School for Boys in Kielce, he enrolled into the Veterinary College in Warsaw. Due to the lack of financial resources, he was forced to abandon his studies and start working as a resident tutor. The best-known works of the great Polish writer include such titles as The Labors of Sisyphus, Homeless People, Ashes, The Wages of Sin, Seedtime and The Faithful River. Stefan Żeromski voiced his opinions on the all-important matters concerning Polish culture and thought, and was deeply engaged in social problems, implementing into life the ideas of work at the grass roots. He was fully aware of the unique role of the novelist and his responsibility for shaping the consciousness of a nation. It is worth mentioning that his books have been translated into several languages. Also, film adaptations derived from his novels were well-received among Polish film-goers.
