On 15th November 1915, Zygmunt Straszewicz was appointed the first rector of the Warsaw University of Technology. He was deeply involved in its development, providing wholehearted support to maintain its independence. A hundred years ago the Grand Hall of the University reverberated with the memorable inaugural speech delivered by prof. Straszewicz. A lot has changed since that time both for Poland, and for the institution itself. Consecutive years of war, socialism and political transformation exerted a powerful impact on Polish social and economic life. Today, not only men, but also the fair sex are among the auditors of annual inaugurations. Dynamic development of high-end technologies confronts the academic community with new challenges, such as increased flexibility and openness to lifelong learning. The Warsaw University of Technology, once a stronghold of independent thought and tradition, today invests its potential and resources in modern technologies and innovative projects, responding to the needs of both the market and the industry. Centennial anniversary of the revival of the University is a good chance to talk about its history and intellectual traditions, but also – to open a debate on its future: potential contribution to innovative solutions and positive social change it may bring.
