The emblem of the institution features a white crowned eagle with outstretched wings, holding in its talons a laurel twig and a palm tree leaf. The first attribute symbolizes hard work, whereas the second one – a reward. The eagle is surrounded by five stars alluding to five departments that the university consisted of at the moment of its establishment (i.e. Medicine, Philosophy, Theology and Fine Arts faculties).   The history of the university was turbulent. Several times it has been closed due to severe historic events, i.e. the November Uprising and the German occupation during World War II. The university was hit by the 1968 Polish political crisis. In consequence of the repercussions, many of its students and employees were forced to emigration.   Since its establishment, a lot has changed both for Poland and the university itself. Years of war, socialism and political transformation exerted a powerful impact on Polish social and economic life. Today, not only men, but also the fair sex are among the auditors of the annual academic year inaugurations. Dynamic development of the high-end technologies confronts the academic community with new challenges, such as increased flexibility and openness to lifelong learning. The 200 th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Warsaw is a good chance to talk about its history and intellectual traditions, but also – to open a debate on its future: potential contribution to innovative solutions and the positive social change it may bring.
