Silver Slovak coin 10 EUR 2021 Slovak climbers - 50y since Nanga Parbat stand | Czech Mint

The Mint says about this coin:

Product description The silver coin with a nominal value of 10 EUR was minted in quality standard to the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the conquest of Nanga Parbat by Slovak climbers. Nanga Parbat with 8125 meters is the ninth highest mountain in the world and at the same time the first 8k mountain man tried to conquer. Dozens of men have died since 1895, and the Himalayan peak was nicknamed the Mountain of Death. The success was celebrated by the German-Austrian expedition in 1953. Czechoslovak mountaineering was experiencing a boom at that time. In the High Tatras, one first ascent was conquered after another. The Alps were forbidden to us, but they were replaced by the Caucasus, which confirmed that our climbers have all the prerequisites to conquer the highest peaks in the world. They chose Nanga Parbat for the historically first Czechoslovak ascent. Although Ivan Gálfy's group failed to ascend, his efforts aroused huge public interest in 1969. Therefore, he organized the second, more successful expedition in 1971. Ivan Fiala and Michal Orolín became the first Slovaks to conquer the westernmost Himalayan eight-thousanders. The composition of the obverse side of the euro coin, which is the work of medal maker Mária Poldaufová, is based on the symmetry of two half-figures of members of the top team, who raise the Czechoslovak flag attached to an ice axe on Nanga Parbat. The reverse side is dominated by a dynamic figure of a climber on a rock wall, behind which rises the coveted eight-thousand-meter peak. The spectacular relief of the coin is supplemented with the inscriptions NANGA PARBAT - 8125 m - 1971 and also the Slovak national emblem. The coin was minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia. More Less
