Apart from its regular circulating coinage, the Solomon Islands has authorised a number of mints to issue collector coins in precious metals, which are legal tender in the country but are not intended for general circulation. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes but some of them - such as this one - are not.

The Mint says about this coin:
This uniquely interactive coin celebrates the story of Theseus, the Greek hero who slayed the Minotaur. Built by the legendary inventor Daedalus, the labyrinth was both prison and lair of the monstrous Minotaur and was virtually impossible to navigate. Do you have what it takes to beat the Minotaur by coaxing the ball in and out of the centre of this coin’s intricate pathways?

Individually serialised and precision minted in 1.5oz of pure silver, this legal tender coin has a mintage of only 2,000 pieces.

The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II · SOLOMON ISLANDS · 4 DOLLARS · 2021 · 1.5 OZ 999.9 AG.

Above left, the inscription 1.5 OZ 999.9 AG (one and a half troy ounces of 99.99% silver). Below right, the unique serial number of the coin.

In the background, Theseus fighting the Minotaur.
