. Released in 1994, the Natura series pays tribute to animals native to Africa. The motive of the coin struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold depicts four elephants at a waterhole. The inscription "NATURA" and details of weight and fineness are also included in the design. A special feature of this issue is the

mintmark "CW"

, which has also been engraved on the obverse of the coin. The reverse shows the head of an elephant as well as the year of issue and the inscription "SOUTH AFRICA". The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is probably the largest and most impressive representative of the African animal world and is generally known as a symbol of power and strength.
