Natura series

to the

Buffalo

. Released in 1994, the Natura series pays tribute to animals native to Africa. The motive of the coin struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold depicts a buffalo fighting a lion. The inscription "NATURA" and details of weight and fineness are also included in the design. As a special feature, the coin was provided with the mintmark "SS" for "Sabi Sabi". The reverse shows a buffalo's head, as well as the year of issue and the inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA".

The Cape or African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a typical grazer. It lives in herds of a few dozen to hundreds of animals and prefers swampy areas and shaded grasslands near water. Particularly characteristic for the buffalo are its sweeping, curved horns, which can reach a span of up to 1.50 meters. As a "Big Five" member, the buffalo was formerly hunted on big-game hunts and severely decimated, so that the species almost became extinct - in the meantime, however, the populations have recovered.
