Rhino

. Released in 1994, the Natura series pays tribute to animals native to Africa. The motive of the coin struck from a 1/4 ounce of 99.99% pure gold features a white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium) eating from a tree. The inscription "NATURA" and details of weight and fineness are also included in the design. The reverse shows a walking white rhino as well as the year of issue and the inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA - SUID-AFRIKA". Rhinos (Rhinocerotidae) are native to the grasslands and tree savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. The population is estimated to be about 25,000 white and black rhinos, many of which live in Kruger National Park. After elephants, rhinos are the largest and heaviest land-dwelling mammals in the world.
