. Released in 1994, the Natura series pays tribute to animals native to Africa. The motive of the coin struck from a 1/10 ounce of 99.99% pure gold features a leopard drinking water. The inscription "NATURA" and details of weight and fineness are also included in the design. The reverse shows the head of a leopard as well as the year of issue and the inscription "SOUTH AFRICA". Common in Africa and Asia, the leopard (Panthera pardus) is a solitary animal and one of the most graceful and powerful big cats on earth along with lion, tiger and jaguar. It is an excellent climber and, unlike most other big cats, can also climb down head first. Its excellent climbing ability also benefits the leopard in securing its prey - it often drags hunted animals into meter-high trees, where lions and hyenas can no longer reach them.
