The largest combined naval, air and land military operation in history, the Battle of Normandy was launched on 6 June 1944. Referred to as D-Day, it involved the coordinated landing of some 156,000 allied troops on five beaches along the heavily fortified coast of Normandy, France. Marking the 75th anniversary of the beach landings, this thoughtfully considered coin and stamp set features historic themes and includes photographs of the operation. D-Day Design The coin’s reverse design depicts allied troops being ferried in large military ships towards the coast of France, where soldiers landed at coordinated locations along an 80-kilometre stretch of beach. Bomber aircrafts accompany the fleet in the sky. Also included in the design is the inscription ‘D-DAY 75th ANNIVERSARY 1944-2019’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. Official Commemorative Postal Numismatic Cover The envelope features photographs of the military landing including United States naval ships arriving on the shore and men disembarking from the massive trawlers. Affixed to the front is a $1 Australia Post World War I memorial stamp and a postmark marking the 75th anniversary date, 6 June 2019, and 1944 to 2019.
