Silver Five Kilos 2024 Music Legends - Paul McCartney, Coin from United Kingdom
CoinSilver Five Kilos 2024 Music Legends - Paul McCartney

This commemorative five kilogram silver coin celebrating British artist Paul McCartney is part of the ninth release in the Music Legends coin series by the Royal Mint. It is the first coin in this size struck by the Royal Mint.

The mint says:
Paul McCartney is one of the most successful and enduring British musicians of all time. An undisputed icon of popular culture, his ever-expanding legacy includes countless hits, a long list of industry accolades and critical acclaim on a global level. From his pioneering work with The Beatles in the 1960s to his time in Wings and his continued global success as a solo artist, Paul McCartney is thriving in today’s ever-changing musical landscape, performing to generations of fans at sold-out concerts around the world.

While Paul McCartney has been universally lauded for his contributions to music and pop culture over the past seven decades, this is remarkably the very first time he has been celebrated on a coin from The Royal Mint. This is also the largest silver Proof coin produced as part of the Music Legends series. Throughout the process, The Royal Mint worked directly with Paul McCartney's production company, MPL Communications, and with Paul himself to bring this captivating rarity to life.

Precisely 8 of these silver coins were originally struck, however, three were later inspected and melted as part of the historic Trial of the Pyx ceremony. One example was then gifted to Paul McCartney himself, resulting in the net distribution of only 4 pieces to collectors.

The Royal Mint has a convention that living people (as of the date of release of the coin) should not be depicted on coinage unless they are part of the Royal Family. Consequently, Paul McCartney is not depicted on the reverse. The mint describes it as:

"Positioned in the centre of the design is the Liverpudlian’s signature, with Paul appearing as he writes it and MCCARTNEY beneath it in block capitals. Meanwhile, Paul McCartney’s iconic, left-handed Höfner violin bass features above the text, complete with the Wings logo gracing the headstock, and the base of the design features the keyboard of a piano.

The background of the design will be familiar to fans of The Beatles, with the unmistakable psychedelia of the singer-songwriter’s iconic "Magic Piano" providing the canvas for the overall design."

Near the rim below right, above the piano keyboard which serves as the exergue, the initials of the designers AR (for Andrew Ross) and DO (for Deborah Osborne).

The background is coloured.

The date, face value and denomination are on the obverse.
