The Kingdom of Ireland (Classical Irish: Ríoghacht Éireann; Modern Irish: Ríocht Éireann) was a state in Ireland from the proclamation of King Henry VIII of England as King of Ireland by the Crown of Ireland Act 1542 until the Acts of Union 1800. It replaced the Lordship of Ireland, which had been created in 1171. King Henry VIII was recognised as monarch of Ireland by some Protestant powers in Europe, although not by its Catholic monarchies. However, his daughter Mary I was recognised as Queen of Ireland by Pope Paul IV in 1555. The separate Kingdom of Ireland ceased to exist at the end of 1800, as Ireland was joined with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on the first day of 1801. |
