![]() George Washington was an American political leader, military general, statesman, and Founding Father of the United States, who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Washington led the Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War, and presided at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which established the Constitution of the United States and a federal government for the United States. Washington has been called the "Father of the Nation" for his manifold leadership in the formative days of the country. To mark the bicentennial (200 years) since his birth, the United States struck a quarter dollar with his portrait on the obverse. Initially envisaged as a one-year (1932) issue only, the design was then made permanent and is still struck on US quarter dollars. The portrait, designed by sculptor John F. Flanagan, depicts the head of George Washington facing left. It is based on a bust of the President made during his lifetime by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. George Washington is shown with long hear, tied below the neck with a ribbon. |

![]() George Washington on a State quarter United States / Quarter Dollar 1999 Delaware The portrait of George Washington was re-cut, and had more text added around it to accommodate the State Quarters program, where more "real estate" was needed for the design on the reverse, so some of the legends and the face value were moved to the obverse. |
