Legend | · MAG · BR · FRA · ET · HIB · REX · |

Full text | Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rex |
Translation | Translated from Latin, the text means "of Great Britain, France and Ireland King". |
This is a partial legend, and is the continuation of what would have been written on the obverse of the coin. On many English coins, the obverse carried the portrait of the monarch and his or her name, and the rest of the legend - such as this part - was on the reverse. The mention of France, and the inclusion of the French shield in the design of the Coat of Arms, reflect the claim of many English monarchs to the throne of France - which none of them actually ruled. |
