This style of the monarch's legend was only used in 1894. On earlier coins, the legend was rendered as ФЕРДИНАНДЪ I. КНЯЗЪ БЪЛГАРСКИЙ - same meaning, with the words ordered differently.
Bulgaria was a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire at the time, which is why Ferdinand I was styled a "prince". In 1908, the country declared independence so on later coinage his style was ФЕРДИНАНДЪ I ЦАРЬ НА БЪЛГАРИТѢ - King of the Bulgarians.
The monarch's personal legend was only displayed on coins of higher denominations which have his effigy. The lower denominations have the Coat of Arms instead. |
