Translation | Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Falkland Islands. |
This legend is displayed on coinage of the Falkland Islands issued during the reign of King Charles III. The islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, and their Head of State is the British monarch. By a long standing tradition, British coinage uses the Latin language for the obverse legends, and this is also the case with this legend. In a departure from tradition though, the name of the monarch is given as Charles and not in its Latinised form Carolus, as was the case of the two previous kings named Charles.
Unlike on British coinage, this legend omits the "F. D." part, which is abbreviated from Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith) and has been an integral part of the legends of various British monarchs for centuries. |
