This set of twenty circulating commemorative one-dollar coins was issued by the Royal Australian Mint in partnership with Australia Post. The series features one coin for the Australian Football League (AFL), one for AFL Women's (AFLW), and eighteen coins each featuring a member club of the AFL.
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the pre-eminent and only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. It was originally named the Victorian Football League (VFL) and was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season in 1897. It changed its name to Australian Football League in 1990 after expanding its competition to other Australian states in the 1980s.
The set is sold with the 20 coins sealed in a cardboard tube, and a collector's folder where they can be placed after the tube is opened. One in ten sets randomly includes the coloured versions of the AFL and the AFLW coins.
This is the second such set. Another set similar to this one was issued in 2023, with different reverse designs. |
