At the height of Australia’s great gold rush, English businessman William Taylor led a failed venture to establish a private coin producing industry in Australia from gold that was being mined in Victoria. Just a few of his distinctive kangaroo pattern coins were ever produced. These rare coins are the inspiration for the Royal Australian Mint’s new four-coin set, comprising four quarter ounce gold proof coins paying homage to the original Port Phillip Patterns 170 years on.
