This sub-set of the standard proof set of the year contains the commemorative coins only, in gold. It includes two commemorative £5 (crown) coins - the Churchill crown and the commemorative for the Battle of Waterloo. There are also two commemorative £2 coins, the Royal Navy and the Magna Carta.
The Battle of Britain 50 pence which is included with the set is arguably an error coin; it shows no value and denomination on either side. The Royal Mint did not admit that this is in error, however changed the designs for the coins issued into circulation later, and added "50 PENCE" to their obverse inscription.
All coins in this set have the Fourth Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Other sets were issued later in the year carrying the new, Fifth Portrait, by Jody Clark.
The coins are struck in Proof FDC grade with frosted finish, in 22-carat gold. The set comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and an engraved plaque with the certificate number embedded into the box. |
