This set contains proof versions of the four sizes of American Gold Eagle bullion coins issued in 1995 - a full ounce and three fractions (half, quarter, and tenth-ounce), all struck by the West Point Mint and carrying its W mint mark. These are special versions for collectors, unlike the bullion coins of the same year which were struck by the Philadelphia Mint in uncirculated grade and without a mint mark.
It also contains a special edition American Silver Eagle one-ounce coin struck by the West Point Mint with a W mint mark - which was a first, as West Point had only struck bullion silver Eagles with no mint mark before. Given its extremely low mintage, this is a key coin in the series making the whole set massively valuable to collectors.
This set was released to mark the "10th anniversary" of the American Eagle range which, given that the first release of the series was in 1986, caused confusion as people expected the anniversary to be in 1996. However, 1995 was the tenth release in the range and that is why the set was released in 1995 and not in 1996. Then, to further add to the confusion, the U.S. Mint marked the 20th anniversary in 2006 and not in 2005.
The set comes in a booklet-styled folder with a Certificate of Authenticity. Mintage was limited to 40,000 but only 30,125 sets were actually produced. |
