Like many other mints, the United States Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. Its flagship bullion range is the American Eagle, part of which the American Silver Eagle. Unlike the versions in other metals, the Silver Eagle is only offered in one size, which is one troy ounce (1oz) of silver. The composition of the metal is 99.9% silver. The design on the coin's obverse was adapted from the Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, which originally had been used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin of the United States from 1916 to 1947. As this iconic design had been a public favourite - and one of the most beloved designs of any United States coinage of modern times, silver or otherwise - it was revived for the Silver Eagle decades later. From 1986 to 2021, the reverse design was by John Mercanti and portrayed a heraldic eagle behind a shield, inspired by the earliest American silver coinage. In 2021, the reverse changed to a design by Emily Damstra depicting an eagle landing on a branch. American Eagles are popular with investors in the US because they are "IRA approved" - meaning that they can be included in an "Individual Retirement Account" (IRA) which can allow the investor to claim tax benefits when the coins are sold at a profit through a discounted tax rate on the capital gains. | |||||||||||||||
