The Ten Groschen was worth 10/100 of a schilling, and was a small circulating denomination of the Austrian Schilling, which was restored as the currency of the Republic of Austria when the republic itself was restored after World War II in 1945. Between 1947 and 1952, coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 groschen; and 1, 2, and 5 schilling were introduced. The 1 and 5 groschen and the first type of 10 groschen were in zinc, which is not very suitable for coinage (it corrodes and wears off fast); a second type of 10 groschen was introduced soon after (in 1951) made of aluminium and with a new design, which was issued in circulation quantities until 1998, and for collectors' sets until 2001.

Together with all the other Schilling coinage, the 10 Groschen denomination was demonetised after 28 February 2002 when the country changed to the Euro currency.

The design of the denomination changed when the initial zinc coins were replaced by a new aluminium type.

The first obverse (1947 - 1949) features at centre the Coat of Arms of Austria (a crowned eagle with outstretched wings) and the inscription REPUBLIK · ÖSTERREICH · (Republic of Austria) around the rim.

The second obverse (1951 - 2001) features a smaller Coat of Arms above the centre; the inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH is below it, taking the lower half of the surface of the coin. The value 10 [groschen] is repeated twice, on both sides of the eagle.

The design of the denomination changed when the initial zinc coins were replaced by a new aluminium type.

The first reverse (1947 - 1949) shows a large numeral 10 for the value at centre, and the denomination GROSCHEN around above; the date is small and is below the value.

The second reverse (1951 - 2001) has the numeral 10 for the value above the centre, and the denomination GROSCHEN around below; the date is small and is below the value.
