Like many other mints, the Royal Canadian Mint issues coins in precious metals having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. Some of these are in the one ounce (1 oz) of gold format. The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at collectors who appreciate these special editions as pieces of art, or for commemorative reasons.
