Barber Quarter Dollar, Coin Type from United States - detailed information

Barber Quarter Dollar, Coin Type from United States (issued 1892 - 1916)
Coin TypeBarber Quarter Dollar

The Quarter Dollar is a United States coin worth 25 cents. It has been produced on and off since 1796 and consistently since 1831.

After the initial issue of the "Draped Bust" type (1796 - 1807), a Capped Bust obverse was used until 1838, and then the Seated Liberty type design from 1838 to 1891.

In 1892, this new design was introduced; it is known as Barber coinage (together with the dime and half dollar which were re-designed at the same time) after U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber who developed it, or Liberty Head after the portrait of Miss Liberty on the obverse which only shows her face, unlike the earlier designs. The reverse is similar to that of the Draped Bust Quarter and displays an ornate American Heraldic Eagle.

The Barber Quarter was only issued until 1916, when it was replaced by the "Standing Liberty Quarter". Its composition, like that of earlier quarters, is 90% silver and 10% copper. In later years, the denomination also underwent changes in size and composition (the quarter is now lighter and made of copper-nickel), but these coins have never been demonetised and are still legal tender. This, of course, is of academic interest only, as their numismatic value is enormously higher than their face value.

Within a beaded border, the obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Miss Liberty facing right, her hair in a Phrygian cap and wearing a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY in tiny letters in a band above her forehead.

The designer's initial B (for [Charles] Barber) is incuse on the next truncation.

Around above, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST; below the portrait, the date: [year]. To the left and to the right of the figure, thirteen six pointed stars (six on the left, seven on the right) represent the first 13 States in the Union.

Within a beaded border, at centre the reverse of the coin shows the main part of the obverse (or front) of the Great Seal of the United States, which displays the full achievement of the national coat of arms. The design has the Union Shield at centre, legally blazoned as "paleways of 13 pieces, argent and gules; a chief, azure" (thirteen vertical stripes, white and red, with a blue horizontal bar on top). The colours are represented by heraldic hatching (thin lines indicating the colour - horizontal stripes for blue, vertical for red, no stripes for white). The supporter of the shield is a bald eagle with its wings outstretched (or "displayed", in heraldic terms). From the eagle's perspective, it holds a bundle of thirteen arrows in its left talon, and an olive branch with thirteen leaves in its right talon.

In its beak, the eagle clutches a scroll with the motto E · PLURIBUS UNUM ("Out of Many, One"). Over its head there appears a "glory" of 13 mullets (stars).

The recurring number 13 refers to the 13 original states. The arrows and olive branch together symbolise that the United States has "a strong desire for peace, but will always be ready for war". The eagle has its head turned towards the olive branch, to symbolise a preference for peace.

Around above, the name of the country: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Around below, the value and denomination: · QUARTER DOLLAR ·.
