Gold Ounce 2025 Pillar Dollar, Coin from Australia
CoinGold Ounce 2025 Pillar Dollar

The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

This coin is part of a range which marks the 225th anniversary of Australian "proclamation coinage".

Although it remains a topic of considerable numismatic debate, a Proclamation coin is usually defined by its inclusion in Governor Philip Gidley King’s famous edict of 19 November 1800, which attempted to solve the currency crisis afflicting the colony of New South Wales.

In response to the ongoing shortages, 40,000 Spanish reales were brought into the colony by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1812. A decision was made to increase the number of available coins by cutting out the centre of each coin. The coins then underwent a counter stamping process, designating the outer ring as the "holey dollar", and the centre as the "dump". This operation prevented the coins from being exported and led to the creation of the first currency minted in Australia.

Obverse
Australia / Gold Ounce 2025 Pillar Dollar - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin displays the bust of King Charles III, which depicts him bare-headed (uncrowned) and wearing a suit and tie, facing left.

Below the shoulder truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials DT (for Dan Thorne).

Around, the monarch's legend and the face value of the coin: CHARLES III AUSTRALIA · 1oz 9999 Au 100 DOLLARS ·.

The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1 oz 9999 Au" means "one troy ounce of 99.99% gold" - Au is abbreviated from the Latin word for gold, Aurum.

Reverse
Australia / Gold Ounce 2025 Pillar Dollar - reverse photo

The reverse design of the coin re-creates the obverse of the famous Spanish dollar (also known as the "piece of eight"), which was widely used as the first international currency from the 16th to 19th centuries. It displays two hemispheres of a world map, crowned between the Pillars of Hercules; the two pillars are also crowned.

On ribbons wrapping the columns, the PLUS VLTRA motto. "Plus ultra" (spelled with V for the second U, as in old Latin) is a Latin phrase and the national motto of Spain. A reversal of the original phrase "non plus ultra" ("Nothing further beyond"), said to have been inscribed as a warning on the Pillars of Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar (which marked the edge of the known world in antiquity), it has metaphorical suggestions of taking risks and striving for excellence. Its original version, the personal motto of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, also Duke of Burgundy and King of Spain (as Carlos I), was "Plus oultre" in French. The motto was adopted some decades after the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

It has been suggested that the S-shaped configuration of the banners around the columns explain the origin of the $ sign.

Around above, the inscription VTRAQUE VNUM, meaning "both are one" - a symbol of the unity of the Old World and the New World.

Around below, the year of issue 2025 (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold), surrounded by flowers and two Mo (small o above M) mint marks - for Mexico City, which is the mark of the Mexican Mint. This design element pays homage to the tradition of Spanish Empire coins bearing distinct mark signifying their minting location.

The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse.
