The Barbadian Dollar has been the currency of Barbados since 1973, when it replaced the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively BBD $ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are typically in standard bullion sizes, such as one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). The 2021 1oz Barbados Caribbean Seahorse Silver Coin is part of the Caribbean Silver and Gold series by MDM, and the fourth issue highlighting one of the most unique fishes in the ocean, the seahorse. Seahorses are truly unique, and not just because of their unusual equine shape. Unlike most other fish, they are monogamous and mate for life. Rarer still, they are among the few animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young. A baby seahorse is called a fry. Seahorses are found in shallow tropical and temperate waters throughout the world. These upright swimmers are relatives of the pipefish and can range in size from 1.5 to 35 centimetres long. | ||||||
