|Coin||Gold Tenth-Ounce 2021 Prince Philip|
The Democratic Republic of the Congo normally uses banknotes for circulation, and does not issue coins in the Congolese Franc currency. However, the country has authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction.
Most of them are in popular international sizes, including the tenth-ounce of gold (1/10 oz) format - such as this coin.
This gold coin is dedicated to the memory of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921 - 2021), the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
The "Iron Duke" had been married to Queen Elizabeth II since 1947 and was always considered an important support for the Queen. In 2017, he had largely withdrawn from the public eye due to health problems. On 9 April 2021, just two months before his 100th birthday, the Prince Consort passed away surrounded by his family, leaving behind four children, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on 17 April 2021 in St George's Chapel in Windsor.
Within a beaded border, the obverse of the coin depicts the Coat of Arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which consists of a leopard head surrounded by an elephant tusk to the left and a spear to the right. On a ribbon below, the national motto JUSTICE PAIX TRAVAIL (from French: Justice, Peace, Work).
Below the Coat of Arms, in small letters the precious metal of the coin: 1/10 oz Au 999 (one tenth of a troy ounce of 99.9% gold; Au is abbreviated from Aurum, the Latin word for gold).
Around above, the name of the country: REPUBLIQUE DEMOCATIQUE DU CONGO.
Around below, the nominal face value of the coin: · 20 FRANCS ·. Divided by the Coat of Arms, the date of issue 2021.
The reverse design shows the coffin in which Prince Philip was buried, with a wreath of flowers, his hat and his sword on top. Above left, the shield from the prince's personal coat of arms, quartered with symbols related to his title: top left, three crowned lions and nine small hearts - for his royal lineage from Denmark; top right, a wide cross for his royal lineage from Greece; bottom left, vertical stripes for Battenberg and Mountbatten; bottom right, a castle for his title of Duke of Edinburgh.
