The Cook Islands, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar circulates in parallel with the local Cook Islands Dollar; at the same time, the government also authorises many legal tender coins in the Cook Islands Dollar currency for collector's purposes. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes, including the very large one kilogram of silver format - such as this coin.
The Mint says about it: Steampunk has become a cultural phenomenon. Having an impact on everything from film to fashion, this subculture of Science Fiction has grown in popularity and influence since it was first mentioned in the 1980’s. Loosely defined as combining Victorian age mechanical technology with modern applications, its unique look can be seen everywhere. In a nutshell Steampunk is what people thought about the future with their knowledge and techniques 200 years ago.
The first (and also the second) edition of our new Steampunk series were an instant success and sold out immediately. Due to the intense demand and requests for other specifications, CIT is happy to release a bigger and bolder version in an impressive 1 kg edition! The “big brother” of the 2 ounce version utilises on 100 mm even more the enhanced smartminting technology with ultra-high relief of today combined with old world design elements that create a coin like no other. Look closely at all the mechanical details this coin has! The selected gilding enhances the look as well as pays tribute to the striking contrast elements that are characteristic of Steampunk. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II COOK ISLANDS 100 DOLLARS STEAMPUNK.
The effigy and inscription are in a small circle, surrounded by representations of steam engine parts; around below right, a large inscription reads STEAMPUNK. |

On a cogwheel in the background, the date of issue 2022. |
