The obverse of the coin features at its centre the Yin and Yang symbol, across which is inscribed the face value 1/4 € (Quarter Euro), and RF, which stands for "République Française" - French Republic.
In the lower part of the central circle, two privy marks: the Cornucopia of the Paris Mint, and the personal mark of the Chief Engraver of the mint Joaquin Jimenez - a small square whose upper left quarter is occupied by a smaller square - symbolising his initials JJ, plus a stylised rhinoceros head.
In twelve sectors around, cartoon-style depictions of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, each inscribed with its French and Chinese name: Rat 鼠 (rat, or mouse), Boeuf 牛 (ox), Tigre 虎 (tiger), Lapin 兔 (rabbit, or hare), Dragon 龍 (dragon), Serpent 蛇 (snake), Cheval ⾺ (horse), Chèvre 羊 (goat), Singe 猴 (monkey), Coq 鷄 (rooster), Chien 狗 (dog), and Cochon 猪 (pig). |
