Coin | Silver Kilo 2022 Mandala Tiger |
---|
|
The Ghanaian Cedi has been the currency of Ghana since 1965, when it replaced the pre-decimal Ghanaian Pound.
Apart from the regular circulating coinage, the country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are typically in standard bullion sizes, including in the very large one kilogram of silver format (abbreviated as 1 kg Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).
This coin is part of the Mandala Collection and features a Tiger to mark the 2022 Lunar Year of the Tiger (1 February 2022 to 21 January 2023).
Mandala bears a powerful symbolism and is interpreted as the model of the universe, and its complicated structures convey the sense of harmony and calmness. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: ELIZABETH II REPUBLIC OF GHANA 1000 CEDIS 2022 1 kg Ag999.
The inscription also includes the precious metal content; 1 kg Ag 999 means "one kilogram of 99.9% silver - "Ag" is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for silver.
It is unclear why the Queen's effigy and legend are shown, given that she was Queen of Ghana only until 1960, after which time the country became a republic. |
