Downies says about this coin:
Honouring Captain Cook’s Second Voyage to the Pacific (1772-75), the 2025 $100 The Search for Terra Australis 1oz Gold Proof Coin is prestigious, eyecatching and very, very exclusive. The worldwide mintage is a mere FIFTY coins! Paying homage to Captain Cook’s quest to prove the existence or otherwise of a great southern landmass, this coin is a masterpiece of maritime memorabilia. Struck to the highest possible quality from 1oz of pure 99.99% gold, the crown-sized flan forms the perfect venue for the depiction of Cook’s ship, Resolution, in full sail. Creating a breathtaking contrast with the glittering gold surfaces, the backdrop to this iconic vessel has been rendered in full-colour. Illustrating the depth of thought that has gone into the creation of this unique tribute, the outline of the full-colour motif portrays Captain Cook in silhouette profile! Legal tender of Niue – the first known European sighting of which was by Cook during the Second Voyage, in 1774 – each coin also carries the portrait of King Charles III by the Royal Mint’s Jody Clark. Given that the mintage is a mere 50 coins, and considering that Captain Cook is one of the world’s most famous explorers, we anticipate that the 2025 $100 The Search for Terra Australis 1oz Gold Proof will sail to a sell-out at super speed. Don’t miss the boat! Order now! The Second Pacific Voyage (1772-75) Captain Cook’s boundless energy and thirst for adventure saw him set off on his second Pacific expedition in 1772. Despite circumnavigating New Zealand and charting the Australian east coast on the first voyage, many still believed that a further great southern landmass existed – Terra Australis Incognita. Having been lauded after his first voyage, Cook’s major remit on the second voyage was to establish the truth or otherwise of this theory. After a delay caused by the unreasonable demands of Joseph Banks, the expedition set sail on the ships Resolution and Adventure in July of 1772. In January of 1773, aboard the Resolution, Cook made the first recorded crossing of the Antarctic Circle – a feat he achieved on two subsequent occasions during the 100,000km voyage. The importance of this achievement cannot be overstated, as it marked the start of a new era of exploration and discovery. Having almost reached mainland Antarctica, Cook sailed extensively across the Pacific. By sailing over most of its predicted locations during the Second Voyage, Cook largely put to bed the idea that a massive southern continent existed. Overall, the Second Voyage was a huge success. Not only settling debate over the existence of Terra Australis Incognita, Cook had travelled further south than anyone before him, and made maps of the Pacific Ocean that were so accurate that they were still being used well into the 20th century. Due to his many achievements on this famous expedition, Cook was promoted, and was feted by the Admiralty, the Royal Society and the House of Lords.
