Niue is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, and New Zealand conducts most diplomatic relations on its behalf. Niueans are citizens of New Zealand
The Niue Constitution Act of 1974 vested executive authority in Her Majesty the Queen in Right of New Zealand (at that time Queen Elizabeth II) and in the Governor-General of New Zealand.
King Charles III acceded to the throne on 9 September 2022 (due to a time zone difference it was 9 September in Niue when it was 8 September in the United Kingdom) upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the Head of State of a number of realms of the Crown. Among other things, he also became Head of State of Niue - in his capacity as King of New Zealand, and not directly. |
