Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety if non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in "Tala" (the local word for Dollar) and cents.
The gold half gram is a mini-coin denominated as Five Dollars.
This coin was designed and produced by Treasures of Oz.
The company says about it: The Creatures of Myth & Legend 0.5g Gold Pegasus Tokelau Proof Coin is an incredible addition to your gold coin collection. The reverse side features a sagacious Pegasus, the winged horse born of Zeus and Medusa, as he leaps out of the clouds surrounding Mt. Olympus. The field on the coin behind him is a shiny mirror that accentuates the stunning detail of Pegasus and the clouds.
This coin depicts the same elegant beauty as all the gold coins in the Creatures of Myth & Legend series. Like every coin in this series, the obverse bears the cameo of Tokelau’s monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the Tokelau badge and motto.
The winged horse is a highly recognisable symbol. The emblem of a striking Pegasus was employed as a crest by British paratroopers in 1941; the design was created by Daphne du Maurier, whose husband was in this unit. The stunning version of Pegasus depicted on this gold coin was created by designer Alexander Vorodeyev. Long esteemed as the symbol of inspiration, Pegasus is one of the most beloved creatures from Greek mythology. Legend has it that streams flow wherever on Earth that Pegasus strikes his mighty hooves. |
