The British fifty pence (50p) coin - often pronounced as "fifty pee" - is a unit of currency equalling one half of a Pound Sterling. It is a seven-sided coin formed as an equilateral-curve heptagon, or Reuleaux polygon - a curve of constant width, meaning that the diameter is constant across any bisection. This shape, which was revolutionary at the time of its introduction, makes it easily distinguishable from round coins both by feel and by sight, while its constant breadth allows it to roll in vending machines. The first UK Fifty Pence coin was issued in 1969 with the classic Britannia reverse design by Christopher Ironside, which was superseded in 2008 by the Matthew Dent design for circulation coins. The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative coins. Beginning in 2009, the Royal Mint started issuing 50 pence coins for collectors - such as this one - which are not meant to be released in circulation, so are classified as Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT). This 50p commemorative coin is part of a Royal Mint series celebrating literary masterpieces, and features beloved childhood character Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins is a series of eight children's books written by Australian-British writer P. L. Travers and published over the period 1934 to 1988. Mary Shepard was the illustrator throughout the series; she was the daughter of Ernest Howard Shepard, a famous illustrator of children's literature including Winnie-the-Pooh. The series begun with the Mary Poppins in 1934. The books centre on the magical English nanny Mary Poppins, who is blown by the East wind to Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London, and into the Bankses' household to care for their children. Encounters with pavement-painters and shopkeepers, and various adventures ensue, until Mary Poppins abruptly leaves, i.e., "pops out". Only the first three of the eight books feature Mary Poppins arriving and leaving. The later five books recount previously unrecorded adventures from her original three visits. For the reverse of this UK coin, product designer Emma Noble has remastered an original illustration by Mary Shepard that shows Mary Poppins making her way on the east wind with her umbrella and carpet bag in hand. No coins of this kind were issued into general circulation. | ||||||||||||
