Effigy known as the "Veiled head" or "Old head": crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left wearing a veil over the back of the crown, pearl necklace and a pendant; on the left lapel of the mantle, exhibited full-face, is the ribbon and Star of the Garter, part of the outer edge of which is covered by the veil; around, the legend VICTORIA · DEI · GRA · BRITT · REGINA · FID · DEF · IND · IMP · (Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India); in the field below the bust in small letters, the artist's initials, T.B. (for Thomas Brock).

Figure of Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and flowing robes; she holds a trident and rests her right hand on a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag; a sailing ship (not present in the finally adopted version, and different from the earlier version) sailing to the right; there is no lighthouse at left; around, the denomination ONE PENNY; in exergue, the date 1894.

Notes

CoinFactsWiki wrongly attributes the coin to type Spink 3961 and Krause KM# 790. However, a) it is not listed in either source at all, and b) if it was listed, it would have a different ID since the reverse substantially differs from the subsequent issues of the "Fourth Britannia design" type.
