Gold half guinea coins were struck using this effigy of King George III from 1804 until 1813. Designed by Lewis Pingo, it shows the king in profile and laureated in the classic fashion. This portrait was subsequently used on the guinea struck in 1813 to pay Wellington’s troops in Europe and which was henceforth dubbed the "military" guinea. |
