Translation | Translated from Latin: Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the British, Defender of the Faith. |
This legend was displayed on some of the silver coinage of the United Kingdom between 1851 and 1887 during the reign of Queen Victoria. Used on "gothic" type florins only, it is written in highly decorative (Gothic script) lower case letters. The year is in Roman numerals, such as mdcccli for 1851 (see photo below). The spelling changed in 1867 to read "britt" (double t) until the end of the Gothic florin series. Below, you can find a list of the individual coins featuring this legend on their obverse. |
