This legend was displayed on some pattern British coins in 1937, in preparation for coinage in the name of King Edward VIII. After his abdication though, none of these was released. Even on many specimens, the legend and effigy do not survive - on some examples, they have been machined off, leaving a uniface coin with the obverse entirely blank. By long-standing tradition, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On coinage, these are abbreviated because of the limited space available.
