Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India. Hong Kong was ceded to the British Empire as colony under her reign on 26 January 1841. On 29 August 1842, the cession was formally ratified in the Treaty of Nanking, which ceded Hong Kong "in perpetuity" to Britain. The royal styles used by Queen Victoria were: 1837 – 1876 "By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith". 1876 – 1901 "By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India". |
