These coins were issued in the 150th Anniversary mint sets with a mintage of 10,000. They were struck by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and were designed by Horst Hahne.

There was also an "off-metal" proof minting in silver. Silver coins weigh 6.53g.

The regular mint sets of the year featured the traditional ten cent coin with the "koruru" design.

Obverse

Crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a necklace, facing right (effigy known as the "Third portrait"); around, the monarch's legend ELIZABETH II NEW ZEALAND; below, the date 1990. Incuse in tiny letters on neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM (for Raphael David Maklouf).
